Ivaldi, Paolo
Paolo Ivaldi (Oviglio 1905 – Oviglio 1961) was a Latin scholar and priest of the diocese of Alessandria, who taught at the city’s diocesan seminary from 1928 until his death. He entered the seminary at age 11 and graduated with excellent results, then went on to study theology at Alessandria’s major seminary. On 17 May 1928, he was ordained as a priest by Alessandria’s bishop, Monsignor Nicolao Milone (1872–1945).
Bishop Milone appointed Ivaldi as vicar in the parish of St. Giovanni Evangelista in Alessandria’s Cristo district. Concurrently, Ivaldi taught Italian, Latin, and Greek language and literature at the diocesan seminary. Ivaldi held numerous positions within the local diocese. In 1937, he became canon of the local cathedral and ecclesiastical vicar for the Catholic Women’s Union. In 1946, he was appointed rector of the Santa Chiara Episcopal College for Men and ecclesiastical assistant for the secondary school teachers’ group affiliated with Azione Cattolica. A papal bull by Pius XII on 6 April 1948 elevated him to cantor canon. Later, in 1955, he was promoted to archdeacon of the cathedral chapter and bishop vicar for monastic communities.
According to Paolo Ivaldi’s nephew Nino, Paolo Ivaldi composed the epigraph for the Palazzo delle Poste in Alessandria and also authored ecclesiastical documents in Latin (Venticinque 2019).
