Nuntius - 1933

INTRODUCTION

Nuntius is the prose preface to the first issue of the bi-monthly magazine Roma universa, edited by the organisation Comitati d’Azione per la Universalità di Roma (CAUR) and published in October 1933 (Lamers and Reitz-Joosse 2016: 236). The text is the Latin translation of an Italian speech and it is typeset in ‘Roman’ small capitals. The objective of the CAUR, promoting Fascism abroad, is evoked in this text to urge readers, identified as omnes qui ubique sunt Romae amatoribus ('all lovers of Roma anywhere'), to promote the new lictoria civitas (Fascist civilization) throughout Europe. The use of Latin for this preface can be explained by Ussani’s vision of Latin as an international language that could unify the Fascist empire (Ussani 1939, see also Lamers and Reitz-Joosse 2016).

The text opens with an address by the sodales to all lovers of Rome anywhere. The first paragraph concerns the rebellion of wise men against the  established order (i.e. the Fascist seizure of power in 1922) and the restoration of this sick state, governed by stupidity and blindness, to the Roman Fasces, which brought about a new form of civilization: the Fascist regime. The following paragraphs emphasize the idea that Fascism is a new form of civilization that many countries will love. Ussani proposes the new political system set up by Fascism as a leading model for the whole of Europe. The readers are urged to welcome this new culture and to spread it throughout Europe. Lastly, the new Roman way of life is linked to the ancient Roman empire.
